Introduction

The Timaru Civic Trust is an active advocate for high quality buildings and amenities in our city. The character, heritage and disposition of a city is embodied in the successful articulation of its form. Improving and preserving the exceptional design of buildings, streetscapes and green spaces enhances the city environments we inhabit every day. For these reasons we hope to inspire public interest in the beauty, history and character of Timaru.

The Trust owns and manages two Category A heritage buildings and revenue from these leases allows the Trust to reinvest profits back into the local community with projects including: heritage grants; street art; newsletters; heritage trails & interpretation panels; submission on local/central government plans and policies, lobbying on heritage issues and general heritage advocacy and education. We are also partnering with the South Canterbury Historical Society in delivering HPA’s NZ Heritage Plaques within the region.

The Trust’s aim is to improve and preserving the exceptional design of buildings, streetscapes and green spaces that enhance the urban environments we inhabit every day.

  • The preservation, development & improvement of general public amenities of historic interest & promote co-operation in the achievement of these objectives.
  • Public Interest in & care for the beauty, history & character of the city of Timaru and its rural surroundings.
  • High standards in architecture, building and town planning.
  • Knowledge of and interest in the objects of the Trust, by means of lectures, meetings & other publicity.
  • Make submissions to the Timaru District Council for various plans and other civic projects.

The Timaru district is full of interesting heritage experiences, from the remarkable array of early Māori Rock Art, to the Edwardian architecture of Timaru’s city centre, the quaint rural heritage of our surrounding towns and villages and the ancient natural histories evident in our spectacular natural landscapes, stretching from the Alps to the Ocean - there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

The Timaru Civic Trust (Inc) is a registered Charitable Trust (CC22212)
